The role of oxygen
Metabolic processes occurring in the cornea of healthy eye provide its main optical property – transparency. The content of a certain amount of water (78 %) is supported by the work of epithelial – endothelial “pump” which require significant energy costs. Cornea receives energy with the help of oxygen in the process of glycogen dissolution from the epithelium and glucose dissolution from the epithelium and endothelium. Oxygen transmission rate of the contact lenses is the most important criterion of their tolerability because the state of the cornea depends on sufficient and continuous oxygen supply. Old / New – Online is for You!
I heard an interesting conversation on the tube today. A fairly oldish lady was talking to what looked like her granddaughter about contact lenses. The young girl was talking about buying them online and her grandmother didn’t seem to understand this concept or agree with it.
But let’s get one thing straight. The discussion wasn’t centred round wearing contact lenses – it appeared that the young lady already did wear contact lenses. What they were in fact in disagreement about, was the matter of where she bought them.
Now, the young lady in question had discovered a type of contact lens that was more convenient and easy to use. It was also more expensive. Her mother, also present, voiced that the daughter was just being lazy and that the new convenient lenses were unnecessary and much too expensive. From what I recall, they didn’t require cleaning or some such thing. I don’t wear contact lenses but my wife does – and she buys hers online.
Now, this young girl was furiously trying to explain that she could buy these extra convenient contact lenses for half the retail price online. Her mother appeared to not trust the safety of this, while her grandmother was outright baffled by the concept of ordering contact lenses online.
The thing is, with online purchasing, some people tend to perceive it as exactly that – a computer screen that delivers you goods. That’s why it seems incomprehensible that one could receive a pair of contact lenses ordered online that work. But online retailers sell exactly the same brands as the high street. The likes of Postoptics and Getlenses are run by opticians who can advise you on contact lenses, but more significantly, don’t have the overhead costs of their high street competitors and hence can afford to sell exactly the same brands and prescriptions for half the price. The notion that needs to be dispelled in a lot of people’s minds is that the products you buy online come from an inferior warehouse to that of the highstreet store. The fact is, it’s just a different mode of purchasing but if you choose to buy online, a retailer like Postoptics (whom my wife uses) sells every brand of contact lenses which her old high street optician used to. They are exactly the same brand of contact lenses, just posted by an online company and cheaper. If she needs to see the optician, she can book an appointment with her local. But why choose contact lenses on the high street when you can buy the same ones online for cheaper? I felt like saying this to the old ladies but I’m not sure they’d have been any closer to getting it.
