Ayurvedic and Herbal treatment of Jaundice

Author: Jaundice is the most common of all liver disorders. There are various ayurvedic and herbal treatment available to cure jaundice. The ayurvedic name for jaundice is Kamla. Jaundice is a condition in which skin and mucous membrane becomes yellowish due to increased bile content, called bilirubin in blood.
Bile is the digestive juice produced by liver cells for proper nutrition. If bile does not enter the intestine, this leads to an increase in gases. When a person suffering from anemia takes the foodstuffs in large quantities which aggravate pitta dosha or heat body humor, then the increased heat burns the muscle dhatu and blood and causes the disease.

- Kakmachi (Solanum Nigrum)
- Ghritkumari (Aloe Vera) – It is an excellent remedy for all liver diseases.
- Berberis (Jaundice berry) – The herb is effective in all types of liver ailments.
- Bhumyamalaki – It is a small herb whose juice is mixed with honey and taken thrice a day.
- Kutaki – (Picrorrhiza) – It is the best ayurvedic remedy. It is dried and made in powder form. 1 gm of powder is taken with water twice a day.
- Nisoth (Turpeth) – Its powder is taken with hot water twice a day.

- Kumariasava

- Punarnana mandoor
- Vasaka, Triphala and Kakamachi are some drugs which are used for its treatment.
- Arogya Vardhini vati and Avipattikara choorna are recommended for the disease. These medicines are to be taken twice a day with honey or water.
Herbal Remedies for Jaundice
Some herbal remedies for treatment of jaundice are -
- Chicory – For treatment of liver ailments, all parts of chicory plant are used. Roots, seeds and flowers are mostly used. Chicory enhances bile production.
- Snake gourd – Infusion of its leaves is beneficial for jaundice treatment. It gives best result when taken with coriander.
- Onion juice – 2 to 3 tbsp of white onions juice mixed with 1/4th tsp of turmeric and sugar. It should be taken twice a day.
- Spinach – Spinach juice should be taken 2 or 3 times a day.
- Sugarcane juice – it has been advocated as the best treatment of jaundice.
